Death Toll Hits 500 In Sierra Leone Disaster | 810 Persons Still Missing

The death toll from the flood and mudslide disaster that struck Sierra Leone’s capital in mid-August now exceeds 500 and 810 people are listed as missing, the government said Thursday.

“The death toll has risen slightly above 500,” Vice President Victor Bockarie Foh said at a ceremony to receive relief supplies provided by Japan.

Separately, government spokesman Abdulai Bayratay said 810 people were listed as missing, a figure that concurs with estimates by NGOs in the past few days.

The city of Freetown — capital of one of the world’s poorest countries — was struck by devastating floods and a mudslide on the night of August 13-14.
The previous toll, given by the city’s central morgue, stood at 499 dead, 156 of them children.
The previous toll, given by the city’s central morgue, stood at 499 dead, 156 of them children.
Vandy Rogers, a senior official with the country’s national emergency services, said the number of people who had been “directly affected” by the disaster was around 6,000.
On Tuesday, the authorities warned tourists and locals against swimming in Freetown’s waters after 60 bodies washed up.

Baratay said soldiers, supported by forensic experts from Spain, would continue to search for those missing, “as most families want bodies of their loved ones (to) be evacuated and given a dignified burial.”
The location of the mudslide would later be turned into a memorial, he said.
The disaster was preceded by torrential rain that saturated the soil and left vulnerable slopes liable to collapse, the interim head of the Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists, Solomon Tucker, said.

Ifeanyi Dike, a 200-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, was last weekend arrested by the police in connection with the gruesome murder of an eight-year old Miss Victory Chikamnso.
“Without women, we have no future. The onslaught on girls and women is becoming increasingly disturbing. We must protect our young girls and women. This could have happened to any family. This is deeply saddening.
“Please, I do not want my action to be seen through a political prism. The dastardly act should be a concern for all of us as Rivers people. Let us join hands with the police and ensure the re-arrest of Ifeanyi Dike.”
Peterside, who is also the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) called on the Commissioner of Police in Rivers state and other sister security agencies to leave no stone unturned in the arrest of the suspect as quickly as possible, while commiserating with the family of the late Miss Victory Chikamnso.

Southgate: I Have Huge Respect For Rooney

England manager Gareth Southgate still retains a certain level of respect for Wayne Rooney, as the forward announced his retirement.
Rooney announced his decision to retire from international football on Wednesday. He retires as the highest goal scorer with 53 goals and most appearances for an outfield player with 119.
Southgate said the Everton striker informed him of his decision when he contacted him about playing against Malta and Slovakia.
“I called him to firm up the meeting and he said he appreciated me calling, but he’d been thinking long and hard and was going to announce his international retirement,” said England boss Southgate.
“We talked for another 30 minutes and I totally understand his decision. He has a sense of loyalty to Everton and has a fresh opportunity there. I thought there was a role for him to play in the squad, but I understand his decision.
“I’m not sure what else you have to do to become a legend. I congratulate him on a fantastic international career.
“We’re good at judging our players harshly. Rooney’s done everything but win a trophy with England. By that token only the guys from 1966 can be elevated to that level.
“I’ve got huge respect for him. I was fortunate to play with him and manage him. He’s been a pleasure to work with and I’m sure there’ll be a role for him to play in the future.
“We’ve had recent squads without him so we’re used to that. We’ve named a lot of younger players, looking to the future, but I could see the value in having older players in there – like Jermain Defoe, for example. We’ve got exciting players coming through.”

Ibrahimovic Signs One Year Contract With United

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been reunited with Manchester United, after the club confirmed the veteran forward has signed a one-year deal with the club.
The decorated striker played 46 matches for the Red Devils last season, but his season ended abruptly with anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Ibrahimovic, 35, was a floater afterwards, with his contract at United already expired. Reports kept linking him with a move the MLS, nothing materialised from there.
The Swede scored 28 goals for United last season and still did not feel accomplished, he has been handed a second chance in the PL with his previous employers United.
“I am back to finish what I started,” he told the club’s official website. “It was always mine and the club’s intention for me to stay.
“I cannot wait to get back out on that Old Trafford pitch, but I also know that I have to take my time to make sure that I am ready. I have been working hard and will continue to do so to make sure I am in the best possible condition for my return to the pitch.”

Ibrahimovic: Other Teams Wanted Ibracadabra

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has claimed that there was interest from other clubs, but he always knew he wanted to return to the Old Trafford.

The veteran striker’s future was on hold for a while, but it was confirmed on Thursday that he will be at United for another year.
Ibrahimovic missed the closing stages of last season with a cruciate ligament injury, but was still in high demand.
“We had a couple of teams reaching out and wanted ‘Ibracadabra’ in their team but I had such a great year with United,” he told ESPN.
“We had a great season — we won three trophies, fantastic guys, a coach that I know from before. My family were happy.
“It’s not always about the sporting thing. I’m in a situation I have to think 360 degrees around me. Happiness has no value.”
“I think the team’s much stronger this season. Obviously we lost Rooney, a legend for the club, but we signed three new players and they’ll make the team stronger,” he said.
“Signing Romelu Lukaku makes us even stronger. He brings different attributes as a striker than me or Marcus Rashford. He’s a powerful guy.”

NEWS: Anti-Buhari protesters shift focus to Diezani, demand her extradition

OurMumuDonDo movement, the coalition of groups that asked President Muhammdu Buhari to resign or return to the country, has demanded the extradition of former Minister for Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke

This is contained in a joint statement on Friday issued by co-conveners, Charles Oputa and Deji Adeyanju.
They said plans have been concluded to hold a two-day sit-out next Monday and Tuesday in front of EFCC office at Wuse 2, Abuja.
OurMumuDonDo said allegations of corruption and wanton looting of public funds and the collective patrimony of Nigerian citizens levelled against Diezani were “mind-boggling”.
“We call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to apply for her extradition from the United Kingdom to face prosecution in Nigeria”, it added.
The coalition noted that a Federal High Court has ordered forfeiture of several luxurious properties in highbrow areas across the country discovered to be owned by Diezani to the federal government.
“It is therefore unimaginable that the Federal Government is not pushing for Mrs. Allison-Madueke’s extradition to face punishment for her alleged crimes.
“In this light, we will be holding a 2-day sit-out in front of the EFCC Headquarters to demand that the Federal Government applies for her extradition and prosecution in Nigeria.
“We invite all well meaning Nigerians to join us and participate in this event.”

Afriff, Ford Foundation Send 20 On Scholarship As Access Bank, Air France, Others Support Scheme

The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is set to send another set of film students on scholarship – this time, to CineFabrique, a film school in Lyon, France.

Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot of Alliance Francaise with some of the female students

The scholarship is the third in the series, whereby 20 students are selected from the 200 that participated in the AFRIFF Talent Development Workshops annually for further training abroad. The talent workshop is an intrinsic part of the festival programmes that has held sway for seven years.
Unveiling the next set of beneficiaries at a press conference attended by representatives of partner institutions – Ford Foundation and Alliance Francaise on Wednesday, AFRIFF Founder/CEO, Ms Chioma Ude said all is set for the 20 students selected from last year’s workshop to embark on the training – a six-week summer course in the French city.
The initiative, she said, provides beginners and intermediate courses for young people in their choice areas of filmmaking.
Shedding light on this, Mr. Paul Nwulu, Program Officer at Ford Foundation said the scholarship scheme, meant to advance the aspirations of these burgeoning talents, is an intensive hands-on training camp on various aspects of filmmaking.

LR Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot, Deputy Director and Director of Studies at Alliance Francaise, Mr Paul Nwule Program Officer Ford Foundation and Ms Chioma Ude CEO AFRIFF at the press conference

“What we have done for the last two years was to use the AFRIFF to select young filmmakers who went to Montana State University in the U.S. to do an extensive course on documentary filmmaking, focusing on social justice documentaries. And that focus was because that is what Ford Foundation is interested in. We are looking at issues that make the lives of human beings better, so, the young people went there to learn these issues.”
He said Ford Foundation will only cater for 10 of the students who are females because the previous editions had more male participation, adding that his institutions is also concerned with advancing the career of women.
“One of the things that make this year unique is that we actually asked AFRIFF to focus on young women to tell these stories and why we did that is because we looked at the data for the first two years, we trained about 36 young people over the first two years and women were ‘marginalized’ in that process. We had less than half of women and we felt like, if we look at our society today, women are the most ‘marginalized’ groups in our society. Even though they make half the population of this country, they are nowhere in our parliament in this country; we have less than five percent of women there. Also, look at governor’s appointed positions; we have a lot less women than any other country in the region.”
The last two seasons had Ford Foundation bankrolling the scholarship at the prestigious Montana State University, United States. Nwulu said the Foundation is encouraged to support AFRIFF on the scholarship because feedback from previous efforts has been laudable.
“This year, we have decided to move the location from Montana to Lyon, France to give a different type of experience, and for Ford Foundation, one of the reasons why we decided to partner AFRIFF is because, if you look at very viable partners that are dealing in the space of storytelling, AFRIFF is one of them, with their film festival and their engagement in trying to get African stories out to a global audience. We could not ask for a better partner to work with.”
As a prerequisite to the six-week summer course in France, the students from the 2016 AFRIFF class will be exposed to a requisite French language tutorial at the popular Alliance Française in Lagos.
According to Mrs Emmanuelle Ravot, Deputy Director/Director of Studies at Alliance Francaise, the French lesson is expected to prepare the students in the areas of French courtesies and cultural background, even though the students will be taught filmmaking in English language.
After the course, they are expected to be taken on a tour of Paris and its beautiful sites, including France 24 where plans are on to make them go through brief internship.
Ude said the scholarship is one in a series of other talent development initiatives of the seven-year-old festival, adding that the skill acquisition and youth development initiative was designed to use filmmaking as an authentic vehicle for youth empowerment.
“AFRIFF’s vision is to raise awareness about African cinema, its vast potential and the tremendous socio-economic impact of creative professionals in Africa. The first four years of the festival were strategically intended to build the AFRIFF brand and gain the brand notoriety that has now earned us partnership with global brands like Access Bank, Air France, Ford Foundation, Relativity Media, British Council and Alliance Francaise among others,” she said.
The beneficiaries include 18 Nigerians – Linda Omena Sodje, Adejumoke Aderounmu, Tosin Adeyemi, Hannah Babatunde, Jennifer Eneanya, Olubunmi Ajiboye, Lois Burutu, Cynthia Okoroafor, Olaniran Adedapo Aisida, Marvellous Michael, Bolaji Adelakun, Moyo Shomade, Chisom Ifeakandu, Ekene Nwonye, Ngozi Emmanuel, Obodoakor Emelie, Demola Adedoyin, Vivian Ubochi, and two Ghanaians – Joseph Otsiman and Richard Ofoe.
The beneficiaries expressed great excitement, just as they talked about their expectations.
I am excited to be a part of it, I am glad I am a beneficiary of the scholarship. I am glad I sent in my submission and I got picked,” said Tosin Adeyemi, a female film student from Edo State.
On her expectations, Adeyemi said, “I expect to learn a lot, I expect to come back a better person with more knowledge about my craft and how well to go improving on myself. I expect to improve from 20 to 80 percent.
On his part, Ekene Nwonye from Delta State cannot wait to make a difference in Nollywood.
He said: “I believe this is a great idea that will help build the film industry in many ways; in the sense that we go there to get the knowledge and then we comeback to change the movie industry.”
Continuing, Nwonye said, “I don’t want to expect too much, I just want to focus on the learning and gain the knowledge. But I expect a lot of fun while learning. You know this is film production, so it should be fun.”

Biafra: Ojukwu’s Son Confirms Buhari’s Meeting With Father

Mr Emeka Ojukwu (Jr), the first son of late Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, has vindicated President Muhammadu Buhari on his claim that the duo had a conversation on the unity and indivisibility of Nigeria.

Ojukwu, who confirmed this while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday in Awka Anambra State, stated that Buhari’s position that he (Buhari) and his late father had a meeting was not a falsehood.
He further denied granting any media interview or posting any massage on social media to disclaim Buhari’s discussions with his father.
He said: “My late father actually held the said meeting with Buhari before his demise and all that Buhari said in his nationwide broadcast were true.
“It has been brought to my attention that there is an article making the rounds on social media attributed to me refuting the remarks of Mr. President concerning his relationship and discussions with my late father.
“Let me state the following categorically; firstly, that I made no such comments to anybody, and secondly that I am aware that His Excellency’s comments were indeed factual’’.
He also said he has observed a disturbing trend in the social media whereby fake news is attributed to him on the social media.
His words: “I don’t know who is behind this report attributed to me and what their motivation might be, any time I feel to comment on any matter, I do so publicly and not via some anonymous email’’.
Ojukwu Jr. urged members of the public to discountenance the stories in the social media or any media platform whatsoever credited to him.
On Monday, the president had in his nationwide broadcast made reference to the meeting he had with the late warlord.
“In 2003 after I joined partisan politics, the late Chief Emeka Ojukwu came and stayed as my guest in my hometown Daura. Over two days we discussed in great depth till late into the night and analyzed the problems of Nigeria. We both came to the conclusion that the country must remain one and united.
“Nigeria’s unity is settled and not negotiable. We shall not allow irresponsible elements to start trouble and when things get bad they run away and saddle others with the responsibility of bringing back order, if necessary with their blood,’’ Buhari had said.

We No Fight Again! 68 Boko Haram Militants Surrender In Borno

No less than 68 Boko Haram insurgents have surrendered to troops in Borno in the last three weeks, the Nigerian Army said on Thursday, August 24, 2017.

Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Deputy Director Public Relations, Theatre Command, Operation Lafiya Dole, made this known in a statement released in Maiduguri, the state capital
According to him, the military had intensified campaign through coordinated air and land offensive against the insurgents.
He said: “Air and artillery bombardments were backed by long range patrols and ambushes targeted at preventing fleeing Boko Haram insurgents from escaping and also denying them access to logistics supply.”
Nwachukwu said that the sustained operations had brought the insurgents to the brink of defeat thereby forcing many of them to surrender.

“In their testimonies, the insurgents revealed that most of their enclaves are untenable which made life unbearable for them.
“The relentless offensive forced many of them to surrender to the troops.
“Those who surrendered are currently undergoing rehabilitation and deradicalisation process under the Federal Government’s Safe Corridor operation.
“Undoubtedly, the ongoing operations by troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE are yielding results by putting enormous pressure on the insurgents.
“Evidently, this led to the recent plea by one of the factional group leaders calling for international support”.
The command’s spokesman also called on Boko Haram insurgents to renounce their heinous acts and surrender, reiterating the commitment of the Nigerian Army to guarantee their safety and well-being.

Nollywood actor Yul Edochie, picks Anambra governorship party nomination form (photos)

Weeks after declaring his intention to run for the governorship position in Anambra state, Nollywood actor, Yul Edochie, has picked up his party's nomination form.

Yul Edochie openly declared his intention to participate in the upcoming Anambra gubernatorial elections on July 14, and hasn't looked back since then. The actor who is the son of veteran Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, has been campaigning a lot via social media, addressing Anambra people in videos from time to time.

According to posts shared via his Instagram page, Yul who turned 35 recently, was at the Democratic People's Congress (DCP) party headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, on Tuesday, August 22, to pick up his nomination form, proving he means business.

Speaking to Premium Times in a phone interview, Yul reportedly confirmed the event, stating that he was on a mission to "liberate the people of Anambra state."

He said: “My nomination form event, as anticipated, amassed a large number of Igbo youth who are pledging allegiance to their 35-year-old gubernatorial aspirant; which is my humble self.”
Asked why he decided to run for governor, Yul said: “Politicians have failed us‎. So, I am in the race to touch the lives of Anambra people positively. The people are tired of stories.

The Anambra youth have an opportunity to show Nigerians if truly they feel it’s their time to rule or not. It’s time for the youth to take over. Old ways can never open new doors. Always remember that if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

The problems of Anambra people have come to the last bus stop

I want to become the next governor of Anambra State because I want to reduce poverty in the state, create jobs and rescue the future of the youth. I joined the race to harness the creative potentials of the youths and the resource-endowment of Anambra to move the state to the next level of development. I will also ensure the provision of infrastructure and development of critical sectors in the state is my agenda if elected.”

“DPC is a youth-oriented party and leadership of the party is made up of youth. Their ideals also align with mine so I have no doubts that I’m in the right party. I don’t have to belong to a popular political party to win an election.”

When asked if his father supports his decision, Yul said:

“You know my father is not a politician so you don’t expect him to publicly declare his support for me. But I can tell you that he has given me his blessings and he is also proud of my boldness.”

When asked if he will stop acting should he win, he said:

“It will not stop my acting career at all. I intend to combine both roles effectively. However, I’m willing to jettison acting to face governance for four years should it be required of me. An actor also has a right to contest for public office like every other citizen of Nigeria. So, I think the fact that I’m an actor is a major plus not a setback.”
