Former Military President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in a rare interview with a team from Zero Tolerance (ZT), a quarterly magazine published by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, at his Hill Top mansion in Minna, Niger State, reminisces on why he led a coup that toppled the regime of Muhammadu Buhari and why he approved the killing of his bosom friend, Mamman Vatsa.

Excerpts from the interview seen by Premium Times,  Babaginda said: “We planned a coup towards the end of 1983 that truncated the democratically elected government and the military government came in January 1984. Then that government also suffered the same fate as the democratic government when the military staged one of the finest coup in this country, because there was no blood, nothing was lost, smooth and everybody was treated with the most civility and our administration came.

“When we came in August of 1985 there was a plan to kick us out in December 1985, it didn’t work, they went into operation again in 1990. I think the country was going through a phase at that time, it’s a developing country and we always had one reason or the other for doing what we did at that time”.

On his alleged rift with Gen Buhari, IBB said: “A coup or change comes about if there is frustration in the society. Just get that right. There was frustration in the society between 1984 to 1985. The ground was fertile for a coup. It wasn’t fertile, thanks be to God, in December, 1985 when the first attempt on me was made

“Neither was it fertile in April 1990 when the second attempt was made and we had the support of all of you sitting down here. You write, you analyze, you talk, and you demonstrated. It was not unusual then to hear, in the case of the democratically elected government in1983, a common phase was ‘the worst military regime is better than this government’’.

“So you were giving us the impetus to stage a coup. We are not dummies. If we didn’t have the support of all of you, we wouldn’t venture into it.”

On his alleged wealth, IBB simply replied that he lived on his pension. On corruption in his government IBB said: “Back in 1986, Cooperative Boards as we knew them then was an institution bedeviled by corrupt practices. An ordinary farmer brings his products, the board is there to assess it as either grade one ,two or three.

“A lot of things went wrong, so what we did was to encourage the farmer to go to the end users, negotiate. The end user will also inspect what you have. So the farmer is talking to you directly, no middle man or anything because the corruption starts where the middle man is.

“Once you have identified areas that are prone to corruption, the next thing is to eliminate them  and get the people educated. In the case of foreign exchange for example, you needed to go to the Central Bank or to the banks before you could get foreign currencies but by establishing the bureau de change, you could walk in there, exchange the money and put it in your pocket, go on with your business and you are not robbing anybody.

“One of the things to avoid, especially in government institutions, is too much control, where there is a lot of control corruption easily manifest itself. So you look at where there is a lot of control, try to do away with it and then things will work for the people”.

The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has warned the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, to steer clear from the State, ahead of November Gubernatorial election.

Obiano who spoke in Awka, the State capital, observed that security reports available to him revealed that those behind the threat to stop the forthcoming election are from outside the State.

Recall, Kanu had during a rally of IPOB members at Ekwulobia in Aguata Local Government Area, on Sunday, renewed his call on the people to boycott the forthcoming election in the State

In a swift reaction, Obiano urged the people not to be disturbed by election boycott threats, but to be prepared for such persons, should they attempt any such ill-advised intention to disrupt peace during the election

“We cannot allow somebody called Nnamdi Kanu from another State, to invade our peaceful State, and issue unwelcome directives to us.

“We will not fold our hands and watch such an individual motor in people from Abia, Enugu, and other places, to disrupt order in our State.

“Ignore the empty threats. Go about your lawful businesses, and sleep with both eyes closed. I will keep watch over you with my two eyes open. I will let anyone who dares us know I am from Aguleri.”

The Governor called on the people to take the threats as empty, saying that the majority of those at Nnamdi Kanu’s rally at Ekwulobia, on Sunday, were people from Abia, Enugu, and other places, who should not be part of the election in the State.

NEWS: Adeboye, Redeemers School, British Council sued over certificate

A legal practitioner, Moses Oddiri, has dragged the principal of Redeemers International Secondary School, Mrs. Feyisara Osinupebi, Pastor Ben Akabueze, General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, the British Council and Cambridge IGCSE before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja.

He is challenging the refusal of the defendants to release the certificates of his son, Andre Oddiri.

In an originating summons, Oddiri said the decision to withhold his son’s 2016 Cambridge I.G.C.S.E result, the updated transcript from Junior Secondary School 1 to Senior Secondary School 3, his testimonial/statement and the 2017 WAEC result over alleged non-payment of third term school fees, was dubious.

On July 12 2017, Justice Oke-Lawal, ordered that the documents in the custody of the 1st and 2nd respondents be deposited with the chief registrar of the court for preservation pending the outcome and determination of the motion on notice for the enforcement of the fundamental rights of the applicants. Thisday reports.

However, the respondents are yet to comply with the order following which the applicants sought the court’s permission to begin contempt proceedings against them with the issuance of forms 48 and 49.

The respondents through their lawyer, Emeka Etiaba (SAN), challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear the suit.

In a motion challenging the competence of the action, Etiaba contended that the suit was not properly constituted, the reliefs sought went beyond the realms of fundamental rights enforcements.

On Wednesday, the court took arguments on which application should take precedence in a fundamental rights suit between a contempt proceeding and one challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the fundamental rights application.

Oddiri, appearing in person, contended that the suit, initiated by motion on notice and not originating summons, was properly constituted.

He also said the reliefs sought, which he said bordered on the release of the confiscated school documents breaches Article 17, of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights, the Child Rights Law of Lagos State and sections 36 and 34 of the 1999 Constitution.

He also argued that the General Overseer, Adeboye is a necessary party and has submitted himself to the jurisdiction of the court with an affidavit deposed to on his behalf and consent aligning himself with the confiscation of the documents.

The vacation judge, Justice Ganiyu Safari who heard the case, adjourned the matter to 25th of August 2017 to rule on which application should be heard first, between committing the respondents to prison for contempt or the application challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter.

NBC Denies Placing Ban On Songs By Olamide, Davido, 9ice

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has refuted reports making the round that it banned songs by three prominent Nigerian musicians; Olamide, Davido and 9ice, having considered them offensive for broadcast.

The rebuttal is coming on the back of reports – which went viral on social media – on Tuesday claiming that the commission had banned songs by the artistes.

The affected songs include Olamide’s “Wo” and “Wavy Level”, Davido’s “Fall” and “If (Remix)”, and 9ice’s “Living Things”.

A report had earlier quoted the Federal Ministry of Health to have, in a tweet ,on Friday, said the video to Olamide’s “Wo” violated the Tobacco Control Act.

“This is our position: the video contravenes the Act. Innocently or otherwise, Tobacco promotion advertising sponsorship is banned in all forms,” the NBC said. ‘

‘The song was banned from being played on the airwaves for its “obscenity, being indecent, vulgar language, lewd and profane expressions,” said the report.

It later tweeted:

Meanwhile, in an interview with Vanguard, the Director of Media in NBC, Mr. Antia Ekanem, denied the report, saying that it was false and the handiwork of mischief makers to discredit the Commission.

His words: ‘‘There was no iota of truth in the report. When we want to give out such information, we usually issue a statement. The originators of the story were only trying to be mischievous. There is no element of nastiness in those songs to warrant ban.”

‘‘If you look at the story very well, you will see NBC described as Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, whereas we are National Broadcasting Commission. We saw it and ignored it because it did not originate from us. I even contacted the Director General of NBC and he said I should try and make our colleagues understand that the story did not originate from us.”

‘‘As far as I am concerned, we have more important issue at hand to handle than all these distractions.’’

Also lending voice on the matter with a denial, Idachaba Armstrong, director of broadcast monitoring, told TheCable Lifestyle that a ban notice of ‘Wo’ and ‘Wavy Level’ by Olamide, ‘Fall’ by Davido and ‘Living Things’ by 9ice did not emanate from the NBC

Armstrong said: “First of all, NBC is a commission, not a corporation.

“Nobody at NBC issued a statement to the effect. We can’t be issuing statements on every album released in the country. The broadcaster has the responsibility to do the needful.

“NBC does not ban songs, we don’t have any business with the artistes. It is left for NBC to tell stations to ensure the songs and videos are fit for broadcast before putting them on air.”

Fidelity Bank charges former staff for ‘stealing’

The Management of Fidelity Bank Plc, Lagos, has charged its former female staff, 31-year-old Adenike Okuneye before a Lagos Magistrate Court.

Okuneye was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos on a 3-count charge of felony to wit and stealing.

The suspect is alleged to have paraded herself as a staff of Fidelity Bank, collecting money from customers after her sack.

The accused wore the T-shirt bearing the bank in carrying out her forgery act.

She allegedly committed the offence between March and August, 2017.

Her luck ran out when one of the aggrieved customers of the bank who is aware she’s no longer with the bank reported her.

The accused, pleaded not guilty to the alleged crime in the court.

Magistrate, S.K Matepo granted her bail in the sum of N 50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Barcelona is yet to find Neymar’s replacement after the Brazilian left on a world record deal to PSG.

Chelsea were open to selling Willian towards the end of last season as he was not playing regularly, but rejected an approach from Manchester United over the summer.

Daramola said that whether banned or not, people need to know the impact of the artists’ songs to the society, and whether their children can relate to what they are singing.

“As much as I love these fantastic talented artists and I don’t have anything against them but 1st we are Africans though our now has been taken care of, but what’s going to happen to our kids and the ones yet unborn, our future?”
