Antigraft war: Buhari warned by Prof Odinkalu

– The NHRC chairman, Prof Odinkalu has commended President Buhari’s antigraft war

 – Prof Odinkalu has also warned Buhari of the pitfalls in his antigraft campaign

– Odinkalu has also berated public office holders who are robbing the nation

Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Professor Chidi Odinkalu, has strongly warned President Muhammadu Buhari against violation of human rights in the fight against corruption.

Prof Odinkalu sounded the note of warningon Wednesday, March 9, during a 1-day seminar organised by the Human Right Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Ikeja branch. The seminar was themed ‘War against corruption and observance of constitutional rights: Striking a balance’.

Odinkalu who noted that President Buhari has shown strong political will to fight corruption since he assumed office, however, warned that the inalienable rights of Nigerians must never be trampled upon as the president forges on.

The NHRC boss further noted that the fight against corruption should not be left with the President alone but be fought by all Nigerians.

“ One thing that appears to have changed since the inauguration of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2015 is the appearance of a firm will to address the problem of impunity for widespread corruption in Nigeria. So far, some leading members of the legal profession appear also to have been at the receiving end of some of the more high. profile “invites” by anti-corruption agencies. This has been disquieting to many at the Bar,”

Odinkalu said. Odinkalu also lamented that some lawyers are being prosecuted for their alleged role in corrupt practices, adding that “ the Nigerian legal profession has for long hardly done enough to address the perception that it facilitates corruption and clothes those who perpetrate it with impunity.”

The National Mirror reports that Odinkalu  also berated public office holders who used their position to accumulate wealth, saying that such ones berates public trust.

“ By so doing, they corrode the public authority and do incalculable damage to the capabilities of the state. In other words, grand corruption violates human rights on a grand scale and by ensuring impunity for those responsible for it, it also destroys the institutions of the rule of law and subverts the notion of equality before the law,” he said.

He however enjoined President Buhari to respect human rights while fighting corruption. In his contribution, the former Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Samuel Ilori (rtd) warned the President against violating human right in the fight against corruption.

“ The President has been fighting corruption and impunity since the beginning of this administration but he must do so within the confinement of the law and respect human rights,” Ilori said.

On March 3, Peter Okoye of Psquare released a You-tube video showing him miming to a song titled My Eyes.

The song didn’t have vocals from his twin brother and music partner Paul Okoye. Peter is also promoting the song on his Instagram timeline.

It is a solo effort from him and his fans have started reacting to it. Can this be as a result of the recent outburst of the brothers? Is Peter going to release a solo album? Earlier 2016, Paul and Tiwa Savage as ambassadors of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) did a song on sex and contraception.

When the going was good between the twin brothers none of them had feature in another artist song alone. It is always the two of them.

COMING GENERATION SCARES ME...REAL HARD!

While we have been busy talking about Nigeria of today, I wonder if we have spared a thought about how this country will be in the next TWENTY-FIVE years.
On October 1, 1979, when Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari was sworn-in as president, Goodluck Jonathan was just a 22 year-old undergrad of University of Port-Harcourt. Shagari was 54 years old. Ayo Fayose was 19 years old. Bukola Saraki was 17. Yemi Osibajo was 22.
The generation of the likes of Shagari, Richard Akinjide, Adisa Akinloye, Sabo Barkin Zuwo, Ifeanyi Nwobodo, Ume Ezeoke, Akin Omoboriowo, Olusola Saraki, Sunday Awoniyi, Garba Nadama, Awal Ibrahim and so on has gone for good!
Some of us in our 40s and 50s, when in school, either in the university or secondary school, had lofty dreams, both personal and societal. We were always motivated by nationalists and inventors who had impacted positively on the cause of humanity. We were voracious readers of novels and other books. Nelkon for our Ordinary Level Physics, Lambert for Chemistry, B.O ADELEKE and Goh Cheng Leong for our Geography, Phebean Ogundipe for Practical English, Achebe and Soyinka for Literature and others like that.
We were always flaunting our knowledge of current affairs. Inter-school quiz, Literary and Debating competition were the in-thing.
Nowadays, students can hardly string a sentence together in English without errors.
Fast forward 35 years on and you are shocked and disturbed. Have you ever spoken to or engaged a 20 year-old boy? Ask him what motivates him and he is likely to mention music, hip hop to be precise. He has hundreds of downloaded songs on his phone. He can sing all of them off hand. He knows all the singles of Nice, Neato C, Timaya, Davido, Whiz Kid off hand.
The babes among them take pride in enticing men old enough to be their father on social media with buxomly physique.
But they know nothing about history of nationalism in the country.
Ideas about good society, responsible family and good conduct do not motivate them.
He just want to make money because his friends who does yahoo is rich and rides a good car, her friend who has numerous ‘aristos’ drives a SUV!
The things that interest them are things that do not add value. They have google but never uses it for advancement of knowledge but to download porn and other inanity.
Yet, in TWENTY years time, they are the ones that will be contesting to become governors, senators, Reps members and even President. They belong to a generation that does not care about morality. They belong to a generation that is motivated only by money and its acquisition.
By 2035 to 2040, they will be our senators, Reps, Governors and so on. I wonder if we have ever spared a thought for how this country will look like under them. I told a man recently and these are my words:
IF A GUY WHO IS IN LAGOS COULD USE FALSE PRETENCE TO OBTAIN $20,000 FROM SOMEONE IN UNITED STATES, WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN IF SUCH A GUY BECOMES A STATE GOVERNOR AND IS IN CHARGE OF AN ALLOCATION HE DOES NOT EVEN HAVE TO OBTAIN UNDER FALSE PRETENCE? WHICH HIS STATE IS STATUTORILY ENTITLED TO.
How did we get into this mess? How can we get out of this predicament? I am worried, deeply worried. Are you?

Do have a wonderful night rest.

THIS IS THE BEST WRITEUP I HAVE EVER READ

It was another bright Sunday morning. For Sarah, Sunday mornings were usually eagerly awaited. A smile lit up her face as she remembered she song that has been rehearsed the previous day.

She had been assigned to do the lead singing - an opportunity many members of the choir craved, especially on Thanksgiving Sundays.

The chiming of the grandfather clock in their state-of-the-art living room broke her reverie. It was already 6:45am.she was almost late for the pre-service prayer meeting for workers. She had a hurried bath and a quick bite.

The service would be longer than usual today but far more interesting too.

She quickly inspected herself in the mirror and smiled in satisfaction.
Leaving instructions for the housekeeper, she left the house. Thank God she didn't have to walk. Daddy was out of town so she could go to church in his car. The idea of driving straight to the VIP parking lot was very appealing to her. Daddy, as one of the Deacons, had a special reservation in the VIP parking lot. She got to church in time for the pre-service prayer. Everything seemed solemn that day. Members soon started arriving with various materials for Thanksgiving.

The sanctuary was fuller than ever, as typical of Thanksgiving Sundays.
The choir was soon invited to the stage to minister and as always, the end of the song threw the congregation into moments of wild excitements, accompanied by thunderous applauds and screams from the worshippers.
Sarah smiled within herself. She always did better than any other person in the choir. They descended the stage and took their seats as the sermon began.

The pastor introduced the sermon for the day - Sacrifice of Praise. He talked endlessly-or so it seemed to Sarah and her like - on the essence and importance of praising God and pleasing him. He emphasised that beyond bringing money and other materials for Thanksgiving, believers were supposed to live God-honouring lives everyday.

The sermon soon ended and it was time to pray. As the prayer session progressed, Sarah and other back-up singers released soft tunes of worship songs from their seats.

She was so enthralled by the melodious harmony of their voices.
Almost immediately, there was this chaotic murmur of voices in the congregation. Sarah opened her eyes and found a few people still in the praying mood. But the majority were busy looking in different directions. She could see something in their eyes. Uncertainty. Confusion or was it panic? And where was the pastor in all of this commotion? Swiftly, she turned to the pulpit area. He was not there! Where on earth could he have gone leaving his congregation in such disarray? A brief scan through the choir seat revealed that some of them were also missing.
Even Matilda wasn't there but her crutches were in sight.

Where could she have gone without her crutches?
By this time the whole congregation had been thrown into utter confusion. Some of them were seen in small groups, conversing in frantic whispers. Many did not understand what was going on. Sarah ran wildly towards the back of the sanctuary. She had to find mama. Seeing the swivel chair her mother sat on made her heart skip a bit. It couldn't be! Mama was not in her chair, only the bag she had come to church with was there.

Next she made for the church nursery and found all the cradles empty. She saw an old lady, obviously one of the nannies, crying uncontrollably. She tried to find out from her where other nannies had gone and why the cradles were empty. But the nanny couldn't utter a word - only heartbreaking sobs. She dashed back towards the main auditorium.

She bumped into Sam, one of her friends whom her mother had consistently warned her against moving around with. He breathlessly confirmed that people were missing and there seemed to be no trace of them.
She decided then to go home. As she made for the gate, she saw Freda. Freda wasn't a member of their church. In fact, mama had tried severally to invite her for service, but she never agreed.
What was she doing at the church gate crying so disconsolately? Sarah tried to calm down and ask her friend what the matter was. And the only thing she could muster were "That thing your mother always talked to me about has happened." Sarah was dazed.

What was she talking about? No, it couldn't be!
As quickly as her legs could carry her, she ran, almost blindly to the house, forgetting the car she came to church in. "Maybe mama is there, maybe Daddy has returned from his trip, maybe Pat and Jane where there too, maybe, just maybe

." The deafening silence that greeted her as she walked into the living room which was busy only few hours ago paralysed her.

She picked up her handset. She could put a call through to mama. After a few trials, she remembered seeing mama's bag in her swivel chair behind the church. Calling Daddy was her surest bet. Since he was out of town, there probably weren't such disappearances where he was. Ah! Daddy's number won't even connect! As if drawn by some magnetic force, she made her way to where the radio set was.

She could probably get some information from the news. She turned on the radio and tuned. Just as she was about giving up, she had a male voice announcing the sudden disappearance of people in every part of the nation and maybe the world. He noted that most of them were Christians.

How will the day of the rapture be for you?

Will u be missing or be looking for saints who are already gone?????

Metuh Loses suit against EFCC on fundamental human rights

– The court ruled that it lacked the jurisdiction to address Metuh’s suit

– Metuh ordered to pay N15,000 to the EFCC

The national publicity secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh has lost his suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on abuse of his fundamental human rights.

In its ruling, today, March 9, Justice Okon Abang said that the court lacked the jurisdiction to decide on the matter which already had a superseding court order. He said the respondent in its argument informed the court that it had obtained a remand order from a magistrate court in Abuja.

While stating that the magistrate court lacked the jurisdiction to provide a remand order, Abang said, the matter before it is not to rule on whether the magistrate court could give such order or not.

Olisa Metuh has argued that his prolonged detention by the respondent is against the law.

Abang said: “I have to point out at the preliminary stage of this judgement the applicant in this suit is not on trial, in this case the court is delivering judgment on the application of fundamental human rights.”

He said the decision of the court is to make judgement whether the EFCC violated the rights of the applicant during his detention and not on whether Metuh is on trial. He however said that the applicant application on bail is struck out since applicant has already been granted bail by the court.
